Total ecstasy arrives in two, finely-honed Ferrari specials

Strictly limited-edition, special-series cars, highlights Iain Robertson, are the first in a new segment called ‘Icone’ and draw inspiration from the most evocative Ferraris of the 1950s, while featuring the most advanced sports car technology of today.

Aimed at dedicated clients and collectors, the Monza SP1 and SP2 models reference Ferrari racing barchettas of the past, not least the 1948 166 MM, which originally inspired the name ‘barchetta’, and the later 750 and 860 Monza racing cars. Designed with the sole aim of winning, those uncompromising models helped build the Ferrari legend in the 1950s, by delivering a slew of victories in the World Sports Car Championship.

The Ferrari Monza SP1 has been designed as an uncompromising single-seat road car that offers a truly unique experience behind the wheel. The second configuration, the Monza SP2, thanks to the elimination of the tonneau cover and the addition of a second protective screen and roll-bar, is a two-seater enabling a passenger to share the same driving sensations.

Both cars possess unique design features, the best weight-to-power ratio of any barchetta tipping the scales at around 1.5-tonnes, thanks to the extensive use of carbon-fibre in their construction, and distinctive detailing, such as head and tail-lights, wheels and interior, to further enhance their relative exclusivity. Equipped with the most powerful engine that Maranello has ever built, a 6.5-litre, 810bhp V12, they can sprint from 0-60mph in 2.6s and 0-120mph in 7.6s. The top speed is given as over 186mph.

Their architecture is based on a monolithic form, with an aerodynamic wing profile. The complete absence of a roof and windscreen gave the designers freedom to create unique proportions impossible on a traditional open-topped spyder. An impression of blistering speed, normally the preserve of Formula 1 drivers, derives from a cockpit carved from the car’s volume that wraps around the driver. Crash helmets and racing suits are recommended.

Both SP1 and SP2 convey an ideal of timeless elegance, minimalist form and refined detail in an understated but formal design language. A radical choice was made for the design of the cars’ compact doors, which scissor upwards. Equally important is the all carbon-fibre one-piece bonnet-wing assembly that is hinged at the front to showcase the imposing V12 engine once opened.

The 4.65m long bodyshells are made entirely from lightweight carbon-fibre. The interiors are trimmed in the same material with a natural finish to enhance the sporty impact. Weight reduction and the ‘barchetta’ configuration guarantee unique vehicle dynamics: they are perfectly balanced with no body roll evident and pure, uncompromised sports-car handling characteristics.

Especially for Monza SP1 and SP2 owners, Ferrari, in collaboration with two leading luxury brands, Loro Piana and Berluti, has created elegant gentlemen-driver inspired apparel and accessories. The driver’s selection includes racing overalls, jersey, helmet, gloves, scarf and driving shoes.

FCD Summary

While not impossible, it is unlikely that an FCD customer will indulge their fantasies in Ferrari’s latest collector toys. The price tag is sure to be in telephone dialling territory and only ardent Ferraristas will be able to obtain one anyway. However, it does no harm to drool…
