The secret is out on the new Skoda Scala

Forgive the carefully disguised photographs of Skoda’s all-new Golf-size mainstreamer, asks Iain Robertson, as he reveals more details about a very exciting addition to the Skoda range, not set to arrive in the UK until early-2019.

The Scala offers a high level of active and passive safety, full-LED headlights and tail lights, plenty of space for luggage and passengers, as well as numerous ‘Simply Clever’ hallmark features. Five engine variants will be available, ranging from 87 to 147bhp. The five-door hatchback combines a conservative design with a high degree of functionality and state-of-the-art connectivity. Skoda’s new Scala (I wish it were Skala!) will enter the UK market as early as the first half of next year.

The new car opens a fresh chapter in Skoda’s brand development. It sets benchmarks in this segment with regards to technology, safety and design and embodies the brand‑typical smart understatement. New sculptural lines, dynamic elements and precise features lend the vehicle a strong personal identity, not least by the use of ŠKODA in block lettering on the tailgate instead of the usual head-dress logo.

Scala will offer generous space in the interior, the body measuring 4,362mm in length, 1,793mm width and 1,471mm height. A long wheelbase of 2,649mm affords the car excellent driving characteristics. It actually offers better cabin space utilisation than an Octavia and a boot of 467-litres that can be extended to 1,410-litres, with the rear seats folded.

As well as rear dynamic indicators, hidden beneath the rear bumper is an optional ‘Simply Clever’ feature: an electrically retractable tow bar, which can be folded out using a button in the boot. Other features offered include an umbrella compartment (incl. umbrella) in the driver’s door and the ice scraper in the fuel filler flap, as well as the optional electric tailgate incl. tip-to-close function. Virtual Cockpit (all digital) is an option, can be configured in a variety of ways and is available with a 10.25-inch display, the largest in the compact car segment. The infotainment system display measures up to 9.2 inches.

Gearbox options range from standard 5-speed manual, to 6-speed manual and 7-speed, automated-manual DSG type. Even with its standard chassis setup, the new Scala offers safe and agile handling characteristics. An optional, new Sport Chassis Preset, which offers two different levels of tuning, provides even more individual options and sportiness from its 15 mm lower stance on the VW Group’s MQB platform.

City Emergency Brake and distance cruise are standard. The optional Park Assist lends the driver a hand by manoeuvring the Scala into and out of parallel and bay parking spaces. Other passive safety systems increase the level of safety even further. Never has a Skoda been so well-equipped before. As soon as we have an early drive opportunity of the new Skoda Scala, you will be among the first to know about it.
