Thanks to Channel Four’s coverage of the Great British Bake-Off, baking fever has once again gripped the nation and Skoda UK is no exception. The British sales and marketing arm of the Czech company has partnered with professional baker and 2016 Great British Bake-Off winner, Candice Brown, to re-imagine a delicious, small-scale replica of the iconic Fabia cake. It comes more than a decade after Skoda’s infamous television advert, which saw a life-size version of the Fabia car being produced almost entirely out of cake.
Candice drew inspiration from the new sporty Fabia Monte Carlo model that was revealed in September. The car’s ‘interior’ was built from six layers of fluffy lemon sponge sandwiched together with a mouth-watering citrus-infused buttercream, before being carved to form the outline of the car. For the bright red ‘exterior’, Candice used various colours of fondant icing to sculpt the newly designed LED headlights, wheels, windscreen wipers, front radiator grille and the detail of the Skoda badge to create a perfectly edible miniature of the car.
The original cake, which starred in the hit 2007 TV advertisement, was nearly four metres long and one-and-a-half metres high, which was a fairly tall order for domestic bakers to get their heads and ovens around. Thankfully, Candice has released the recipe for a more manageable, smaller-scale version, which means that aspiring bakers can make it at home. The recipe is available online at www.skoda.co.uk/FabiaCake.
Candice commented: “Everyone remembers and loves the original advert, so when I received the challenge to recreate the new Fabia out of cake, I jumped at it. We’re encouraging everyone and anyone to have a go, to see if they can recreate the car. The beauty of baking is that it doesn’t matter how good or bad you are, regardless of what it looks like, cake is always delicious, so you can’t go far wrong…hopefully.”
The new Fabia is available in UK dealerships right now and is list-priced keenly from £12,840, before FCD discounts are applied. Aspiring bakers are encouraged to share their own homemade Fabia cake creations using twitter feed ‘#FABIAcake’, in order to win a baking lesson with Candice (if they need it!). The competition closes conveniently on Monday 5th November, which might fit well with a Bonfire Night party.
