One-off E-Type might lead to new replicas

Built exclusively for an overseas’ customer, British specialist, E-Type UK, has not just restored but also modified extensively a V12 version of the classic sportscar, writes Iain Robertson, which could lead to additional commissions for the firm.

Previously relegated to the shadows of the E-Type market sector, in recent times the Series 3 model has begun to shine among collectors and enthusiasts, even becoming hot property for those seeking true driving pleasure and practicality. Subjected to a 3,000-hour restoration to bespoke specifications by little-known specialist, E-Type UK, the 1974 example shown here is probably one of the best ever produced.

Commissioned by its overseas owner, the brief was not only to restore it to perfection but also to tailor the car to his precise requirements, personalising and upgrading it as requested. The team at E-Type UK advised and executed his vision. The result is an E-Type with true duality of character, capable of offering thunderous performance and smooth grand touring potential, while maintaining the classical essence that makes the E-Type a genuine automotive icon.

The V12 engine, originally 5.3-litres in capacity and fuelled by Stromberg carburettors, was fully rebuilt and reworked. A bespoke downdraft fuel injection system, with Jenvy throttle bodies, Emerald ECU and full custom wiring loom, was created for the car. Its engine capacity was enlarged to 6.1-litres and it now produces a cool 284bhp at the rear wheels. The engine produces an exceptional exhaust tone through a 12-branch stainless steel system.

To cater for the enhancements, the car’s inner sills were strengthened, extended louvres were added to the bonnet and additional air ducting was created. A sports steering rack was fitted for a heavier feel, alongside adjustable suspension, with sports torsion bars all round and 4-pot AP Racing brakes with grooved and ventilated discs to the front. An aerospace-grade aluminium 5-speed gearbox replaces the original four-speeder with electric overdrive. A one-off set of 62-spoke, 16.0-inch Turino wire wheels complete the rolling package.

Inside the car, a brand-new leather interior was created. The seat bases were lowered for a better driving position, based on more modern XJS units complete with seat heating. Beneath the plush carpeting lies Dynamat sound deadening, adding to the audio experience of the iPod and Bluetooth-connected surround sound.

LED illumination has been used as a motif throughout the car, with the interior benefitting from custom foot-well, door flood-lighting and boot-lighting. With a full exterior lamp conversion to LEDs, including Daytime Running Lights, this E-Type is the perfect mix of modern practicality and classical style. Complete with a glowing red starter button sitting beneath the piano black dash, the interior also benefits from a custom air conditioning system.

Recently delivered to the delighted customer, this E-Type represents a world-class example of a restored-modified Series 3. E-Type UK is now accepting similar commissions for customers seeking fulfilment of their own E-Type dreams.
