DS becomes addicted to EV

DS Automobiles, the spin-off PSA brand, has become the first carmaker to offer high-performance, petrol-electric hybrid technology in the Premium-C SUV segment, highlights Iain Robertson, and a promise that all new DS models will also offer EV variants.

The expanding DS7 Crossback range, which has been on sale since early-2018, is venturing into relatively fresh territory with its E-Tense 4x4 model. For the first time, a Premium-C SUV has been able to offer customers a versatile product with several drive modes, driven by three motors (one Internal Combustion Engine and two electric motors), to best combine the energy provided by petrol and electricity. It is also rechargeable from a mains power supply, or through deceleration and brake energy recovery.

The powertrain combines a 197bhp turbo-petrol engine with a pair of 106bhp electric engines and a new eight-speed automatic transmission. Together they offer a combined maximum power of 296bhp, with a torque figure of 331lbs ft, with drive to all four wheels. DS7 E-Tense can cover a distance of 31 miles in electric mode only, due to its 13.2kWh battery capacity. This range is ideal for commuting at speeds of up to 83mph. When the battery level drops, the petrol engine kicks in. Several modes are possible:

  • Zero emission being the default mode. The vehicle is always started using the electric motors, for driving comfort, silent running and zero emissions.
  • Sport mode optimises power and driving pleasure.
  • Hybrid mode manages automatically performance and fuel consumption. Co2 emissions are minimised and declared at under 50g/km.
  • 4WD is for optimum traction in all road conditions.

Using the expertise DS has acquired through its Formula E racing involvement, DS7 regenerates electrical power, whenever the driver decelerates, or uses the brakes to extend the range. Another function, 'E-SAVE', also allows enough energy to drive in all-electric mode for the last six to twelve miles of a journey. The map on the high-definition touchscreen shows to the driver, in real time, the distance that can be driven in Zero emission mode, or where the charging stations are located and available. A full recharge takes just two hours on dedicated chargers, or eight hours using a domestic socket.

On the other hand, using both electric and petrol power, the E-Tense will blitz the 0-60mph sprint in just 6.2s, with a top speed of 136mph. While not a road tax-free proposition, £10 annually is not a high price to pay. The attractive design of the car is enhanced by the 19.0-inch diameter alloy wheels and a new body colour: Crystal Grey. Incidentally, interior space is identical to other DS7 models, as the battery pack is located beneath the car’s cabin floor.
